The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, has urged state governments to pay their counterpart financial commitment which qualified them to access basic education grants from funds of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

A statement by the Director, Press and Public Relations, Mrs. C. P Ihuoma, said the minister made the call at a meeting with Niger State governor, Abubakar Sani Bello, who paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.

Malam Adamu said some states haven’t accessed their funds since 2015 which could have helped them improve basic education delivery.

The minister directed the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, to consider possible assistance to Niger State to develop its three new special teacher training institutes as well as the plans to re-train teachers in the state rather than contemplating terminating the employment of unqualified teachers which can worsen unemployment situation in the country.

Speaking earlier, Governor Bello said his administration had started fixing the infrastructure deficit including providing more classrooms and students’ hostels.
