The Federal Government has warned unlicensed traditional medicine practitioners to desist from operating, stressing that any individual or group practicing traditional medicine without a license shall be severely dealt with.
The Minister of State for Health, Dr. Iziag Adekunle Salako, gave the warning in Abuja during a strategic meeting held on the 13th of October with the Modern Traditional Medicine Practitioners of Nigeria ( MTMPN) in collaboration with the Association of Nigeria Traditional Medicine.
The Minister, who was represented by the Director, Traditional Complementary, and Alternative Medicine (TCAM) Department, Ministry of Health, Pharm. Tile Titus, said the government is working very hard to regulate the use of traditional medicine, as most plants could pose serious health hazards if not properly guided.
According to the Minister, not all plants are medicinal, and lack of differentiation could be dangerous.
He enjoined other traditional medicine practitioners to identify themselves with recognized bodies such as the Modern Traditional Medicine Practitioners of Nigeria (MTMPN) and the National Association of Nigeria Traditional Medicine, the two recognised umbrella bodies, warning that the government would no longer tolerate unlicensed traditional medicine practitioners.
The National President of Modern Traditional Medicine Practitioners of Nigeria, Dr. Ibrahim Dada Nakowa, also appealed to individuals or groups to register with the Modern Traditional Medicine Practitioners of Nigeria, a recognized body under the Federal Ministry of Health. Dr. Amb. Ibrahim Nakowa, who also doubles as the National Coordinator of TCAM and the Global President,Green World for Medical Plants, also warned that the association would no longer tolerate anyone trying to tarnish its hard-earned reputation by administering plants that are harmful to the body all because of money.
Amb. Dr. Dada Nakowa, alongside the National President, National Association of Nigeria Traditional Medicine, Dr. Shaba Maikudi, enjoined all unlicensed practitioners to register with the Modern Traditional Medicine Practitioners of Nigeria in collaboration with the National Association of Nigeria Traditional Medicine Practitioners for effective operation and for the enhancement of traditional medicine practice in Nigeria.
