The Vice President, Senator Kasim Shettima, has said measures were being put in place to ensure residents displaced by insecurity and flood disasters in Niger State return to their homes soon.
Senator Shettima stated this when he visited the Internally Displaced Persons’ camp in Gwada, Shiroro LGA of Niger State on Friday to sympathise with the victims of insecurity and flood disasters in the state.
The Vice President, who also flagged off the distribution of relief materials to the IDPs, said his visit was on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to assess the plights of the affected farmers and to encourage the citizens to have faith in the Tinubu-led administration.
Senator Shettima revealed that each of the 36 states has received N3 billion from the federal government to ameliorate the impact of flooding and security challenges.
He said, “This is a symbolic gesture to reassure the people of Niger State of the commitment of the Mr President towards ameliorating the suffering of the people that have been affected by insecurity and flood disasters.
Shettima said some states like Niger, Borno, Sokoto, Bayelsa and Jigawa would enjoy more support from the federal government due to the magnitude of the disasters they have suffered.
Senator Shettima added that the federal government was collaborating with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and Niger State Government towards providing adequate support to the displaced persons in the state.
He called on well meaning individuals to join the government in providing succour to the victims of flood disasters and insecurity across the country.
Shettima was accompanied by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris; Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Aliyu Sabi and Chairman of Nigerian Governors’ Forum and Kwara State governor, Abdulrazaq AbdulRahman.
Earlier, the Niger State governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago said 14 of the 25 LGAs in the state have had flood experience that caused loss of lives and destruction of properties this year.
