Shekarau said admitting students beyond the available facilities in tertiary institutions are becoming alarming.
The minister made the remarks during the 2014 consultative meeting of NBTE management and the Ministry of Education in Kaduna.  
He said the trend has become a challenge to tertiary education management in Nigeria, adding that “it does not only contribute to lowering of standards, but also distorts planning,” he said.
He also condemned the practice of operating satellite campuses by some institutions, saying government will not hesitate to punish any institution found to have established such campuses illegally.  
“Any head of institution found to be operating satellite campus under whatever guise should blame nobody but himself. Such persons shall be treated as saboteurs and be shown the way out,” the minister said.
Earlier, the Executive Secretary of NBTE, Dr. Mas’ud Adamu Kazaure, told the minister that paucity of fund, abuse of admission rules by some institutions and operation of illegal campuses were part of the challenges facing the board.
He said a number of technical colleges in the country were at the ‘verge of extinction’ due to decayed structures and poor funding, adding that “most programmes being run in such colleges were not accredited.”
