The Nasarawa State Government has commenced implementation of a $20 million (N8.3bn) Nigeria COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus Programme (NG-CARES) for poor and vulnerable persons across the 13 local government areas of the state.
Daily Trust on Sunday reports that the COVID-19 pandemic had affected the livelihood and businesses of many residents of Nasarawa State.

The State Coordinator of NG-CARES, Umar Dahiru, who made the disclosure in Lafia, said NG-CARES is a state-focused intervention programme developed by a tripartite agreement by the World Bank, the federal government and the state governments.
He said N8.3bn which has been earmarked for the intervention programme in the state by the federal government was to ensure speedy recovery and succour for residents of the state.
According to him, the intervention programme is targeted at tackling the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly for the poor and vulnerable segment of the Nigerian society.
Dahiru revealed that out of the total sum of N8.3bn earmarked for the intervention programme, the sum of N1.1bn has so far been approved in a bid to ensure that the programme kicks start without any hiccup.
He further disclosed that during the programme which has a duration of 24 months, 17 roads spanning 165 kilometres across the state would be constructed and rehabilitated to reduce the sufferings of the masses.
“We have now received N1.1bn from the total sum. During the programme, we would construct and rehabilitate 17 roads across the 13 LGAs of the state and these roads span 165km.
“We would also embark on some empowerment programmes that would directly benefit 120,000 residents and another one million residents as indirect beneficiaries,” he said.
