Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Mrs. Akon  Eyankenyi who inaugurated the board said the inauguration is in furtherance of the ongoing re-organization and restructuring of the authority.
She said the new team comprises seasoned and reform-oriented managers who will have the dual responsibility of managing the day-to-day operations of the authority as well as take all necessary steps to ensure the successful execution of the work plan on the report of the approved Project Design Advisory Team (PDAT) for the restructuring and commercialization of FHA.
The minister regretted that the FHA set with the objective of bringing affordable housing programme to the doorsteps of the less privileged and low income earners is yet to achieve its set objective.
“Since its inception about 40 years ago, the authority has been able to build only 37,000 housing units across the country, an average of less than 1,000 houses per annum,” she said.
She said the performance of the authority is affected by “Institutional operational losses, teeming legacy debts, poor internally generated revenue base and inability to effectively function without budget.”
The minister said, “The main purpose of re-structuring the authority is to enhance its capacity and re-position the agency to serve Nigerians better, bearing in mind our current efforts towards reducing the alarming housing deficit of about 17 million facing the country.”
She charged the board members to run a result-oriented and accountable management.
The committee is chaired by Professor Mohammed Al Amin.
