President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other anti-graft agencies to sustain the fight against corruption, describing it as a major threat to Nigeria’s progress and security.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the commissioning of the EFCC’s new zonal office in Ekiti State, Tinubu said the commission was established to protect the nation’s economy from criminal activities.
He stressed that the anti-corruption war must be organised, sustained and backed by strong institutions, modern tools and a conducive working environment.
The President said the administration remains committed to strengthening law enforcement agencies through investments in infrastructure, capacity building and staff welfare.
He noted that the EFCC occupies a strategic position in Nigeria’s economic reform and national security agenda, citing its role in dismantling a foreign-controlled cryptocurrency syndicate in Lagos, which led to the conviction of 192 foreigners.
Tinubu also commended the commission for securing convictions in high-profile corruption cases, including those involving a former minister and a former managing director of a national investment bank, saying such outcomes demonstrate that no one is above the law.
EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, described corruption as the root of many political, economic and security challenges facing the country.
He reiterated the commission’s determination to eradicate the menace, citing recent convictions, including that of a former NEXIM Bank managing director who received a 490-year sentence and former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, who was jailed for 75 years over a N22 billion fraud.
Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, praised the establishment of the office, saying it would enhance anti-corruption efforts in Ekiti and Ondo states and improve access to justice for victims of financial crimes.
