The state chapter of the Academic Staff of Senior Secondary Schools (ASUSS), which made the call in a statement in Lokoja on Sunday, said that the figure represented the number of those retired over the past 10 years.
It said that the government had yet to fill those vacancies.
The statement signed by the state Chairman of ASUSS, Mr Ranti Ojo said that the retiree teachers were mainly those in core subjects like English Language, Mathematics and other sciences.
It said that presently, a number of public secondary schools in the state depended on PTA and youth corps members to augment the shortfall in the number of qualified teachers.
It noted that this was not good enough for the state’s educational development.
The association, therefore, appealed to government to recruit teachers to shore up the performances of the students in public examinations like West African School Certificate (WASC) and the National Examination Council (NECO) examinations.
The statement called the attention of government to the dilapidation of secondary school buildings in the state, saying that many of them also lacked instructional materials.
It urged government to commence the implementation of the Act establishing the National Secondary School Commission and re-instatement of the payment of 27.5 per cent to teachers in the state.
The ASUSS said that it used this year’s Teachers’ Day celebration to honour 247 secondary school teachers who retired from service in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 academic sessions.
It asked government to harmonise the monthly pensions of those that retired before the introduction of new minimum wage to enhance their welfare.
Speaking on behalf of the retirees, Mrs Christiana Agamah thanked the leadership of the association for the gesture and the gift of a set of power generating set to each of them. (NAN)
