Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MOPPPAN) has lamented its exclusion from the Motion Picture Practitioners Council of Nigeria (MOPPICON) bill.
The association complained that despite being the second biggest movie industry after Yoruba land, the northern film industry is being marginalized.
This was contained in a statement by Kano state MOPPAN secretary Salisu Mohammed Officer.
The statement also rejects the appointment of ‘Tango with Me’ producer, Mahmoud Alli-Balogun, as deputy coordinator of the committee and that of Tony Anih of the Film Makers Collective as the secretary to the Committee when established.
“We categorically want to state here that we are not against the bill but the process to which the Information Minster is spearheading the processes. This brings back in mind the speech of Emeka Ike at the Kannywood awards 2016. It is clear that the minister’s action has corroborated the position of Emeka when he said, “Northern film industry is always been subjugated by corporate bodies and those at the highest echelon of government”.
“We therefore challenge the appointments and identification of MOPPAN only as a representative in the said ministerial committee without any communication to MOPPAN who have been in the support of the bill,” the statement said.
