A fire outbreak in the early hours of Tuesday destroyed 17 containerised lock-up shops at Sabo Market in Ikorodu, Lagos State, before firefighters brought the blaze under control.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said it received a distress call at 12:42 a.m. on July 21, 2026, and immediately deployed emergency responders from the Ikorodu Fire Station.

The statement, signed by the Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said firefighters arrived at the scene at 12:54 a.m. and found the fire engulfing 17 of about 30 containerised lock-up shops.

According to her, the affected shops occupied a 648-square-metre section within the larger market, which covers approximately 1,944 square metres.

“Personnel from the Ikorodu and Ijede Fire Stations combined efforts to contain and completely extinguish the fire, preventing it from spreading to adjoining shops and nearby properties.

“No casualties or injuries were recorded during the incident,” she said.

Adeseye said the cause of the fire had yet to be determined and was under investigation.

The incident is the latest in a series of market fires recorded in Lagos, highlighting the need for improved fire safety measures and stricter adherence to preventive practices in markets and other commercial centres across the state.
