An early morning fire, on Friday, burnt three siblings to death in Otukpo town of Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.
Witnesses said the fire started about 1:00am at a two-bedroom apartment behind Jesus College quarters in the home of one Ochoche Ode.
The witnesses said the fire, which cause was yet unknown, was first discovered by Ode’s wife younger sister, who raised the alarm that alerted other members of the household.
It was learned that by the time other occupants of the house and neighbouring residents began rescue operation of the three siblings sleeping in their room, the fire had spiralled out of control and consumed the kids.
Ode, said to be a teacher at Jesus College, Otukpo, had his face severely burnt in a futile attempt to make way into the children’s room to rescue them.
When contacted, the Otukpo Local Government chairman, George Ali, confirmed the incident, which he described as “unfortunate and sad.”
Ali advised residents of Otukpo to be cautious of the safety of their environment, especially during this harmattan season, to avert fire incidents.
Meanwhile, the charred remains of the siblings have been buried.
The police public relations officer in the state, DSP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident but said she was waiting for details.
