Four petroleum tankers went up in flames yesterday at the Kara end of the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, causing a gridlock for many hours.
Officials of the Federal and Lagos State Fire Services, Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), police and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had a hard time managing the chaotic traffic situation.
A road advisory issued by the Public Relations Officer of the FRSC, Lagos State Command, Commander Olabisi Sonusi, advised road users heading to Ibadan from Lagos and vice versa to make use of alternative routes as responders battled to put out the fire and bring sanity back to the road.
Sonusi said the situation was initially caused by two tankers conveying petroleum products.
The statement quoted the Lagos State Sector Commander, Olusegun Ogungbemide, as advising operators of vehicles used for transporting highly inflammable petroleum products to operate them in strict conformity with safety and operation standards prescribed by the 1957 United Nations Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR), which Nigeria acceded to as a contracting party.
