A Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Irapada Kristi, located on Eleye Street in Akure, Ondo State, has been destroyed by a mysterious midnight fire, with property worth millions of naira lost.
Witnesses informed newsmen that the fire broke out at about 2:00 a.m. on Wednesday, reportedly starting from the centre of the church before rapidly spreading and consuming the entire building.
Residents of the area rushed to the scene in an attempt to put out the fire using buckets of water, but their efforts were unsuccessful as the blaze had already intensified.
“People living in the area came out, pouring buckets of water to quench the fire, but the efforts were futile because the fire had gone beyond control,” one of the witnesses said.

Efforts to reach the Ondo State Fire Service for intervention were unsuccessful.
However, speaking with Daily Trust, the prophetess in charge of the church, popularly known as ‘Iya Ewe’, said she was yet to determine the cause of the incident.
According to her, she left the church on Sunday night without leaving any naked flame behind and ruled out the possibility of an electrical fault, noting that the church’s electrical installations had been in use for years without any issues.
She lamented that the inferno caused extensive damage to the church and destroyed valuables worth millions of naira.
The church leader, however, alleged that the incident could have been an act of arson, claiming the pattern of the fire suggested that the building might have been deliberately set ablaze with a flammable substance such as petrol.
No life was lost and no injuries were recorded in the incident.
