The incident, which occurred between 7pm and 8.30pm was caused by a candle that accidentally fell and set the house ablaze. According to the owner of the house, he had left his house for the mosque, telling his family to wait for him to switch on the generator. A candle was thereafter taken to his room and it was the source of the fire.

Weekly Trust witnessed the efforts by neighbours to quench the fire which was later taken over by the state fire service. But the vehicle had limited water and had to wait for another. Sources told Weekly Trust that there was delay by the firemen due to the lack of proper description of the place. According to a witness, the firemen passed the place twice before being redirected by the security men of the university.
