The Kano State Fire Service department in collaboration with Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST), Wudil, will start awarding academic certificates and diplomas in risk and disaster management programmes.
The Director of the Department, Alhaji Balarabe Habu Kabara, who stated this yesterday, said the certificate programmes might  begin this year, while the diploma programmes would commence five years after.
Kabara explained this followed a signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the managements of the KUST and fire service department.
He said so far 12 courses including two courses meant for staff promotion had been introduced for the certificate programmes.
Kabara said the courses include basic fire fighting, junior officer course, industrial, breathing apparatus; special appliance, firemen certificate of competency (FCC), advance certificate of competence (ACC), operational command, refresher, instructors’ course, control operations of firewomen and fire prevention courses.
The director added that the department is also waiting for approval from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for another certificate and diploma programme in fire engineering, a course which he said was only offered in England. He said the academic courses were introduced by the department to enhance professionalism among fire service personnel.
“Kano State Fire service is rendering training to various fire service officials across the country. Our plan is to extend our trainings services to African countries. We have trained 2, 500 fire service personnel in Kano alone and thousands of others from Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Benue, Abia, Niger, Kaduna, Borno, Yobe states and FCT,” he said.
He assured that the Kano State Fire Service Training school is capable of training fire fighters from African countries.
