Livestock Feeds Plc, has presented 100 birds (layers) to students of Government Girls Secondary School, Tokarawa, Kano as part of the firm’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and to encourage poultry farming among school girls.

The Human Resources Manager of the company, Adeniji Adejola described the gesture as a way of encouraging the girl child to grow up with the zeal of poultry farming and self-employment in order to bridge gender inequality.

A statement from the firm quoted Adejola, saying, “Everywhere we operate, we endeavour to contribute to the socio-economic development of the immediate community.

“We earlier did a similar thing in the south in Lagos in particular, and Aba, in the eastern part of the country. The idea behind this is that this poultry economic empowerment project is targeted at our girls so that they can pick interest in poultry farming and maximise the benefits inherent in poultry farming.”

According to him, by the donation of the birds, the firm would be contributing towards the promotion of girl-child education in accordance with the United Nations policy to bridge gender inequality.

“What a man can do, a girl can do better, if they properly manage and sustain the start-up pack, within a short period of time, it will multiply in double folds. These are layers, which will lay eggs, they will generate income from the birds.”

In addition, he noted that as a Secondary School, where some of the girls are studying agriculture, it will help them to acquire both the theoretical and practical knowledge of maintaining and sustaining poultry business.

“It is an opportunity for the girls to practice all they were taught in school in theories.”

Principal of the school, Hajiya Hadiza Usman, thanked the management of Livestock Feeds for the good gesture, promising to leverage on the support toward influencing some of the girls to become entrepreneurs in the poultry business.
