The Calabar-based First Medical & Sterile Products is the pioneer manufacturer of Auto-Disable (AD) Syringes in West Africa.
The MoU was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Ambassador Sani Bala, on behalf of the minister, Dr Onyebuchi Chukwu, while Dr Isaac Nnadi OFR, Managing Director, First Medical Products & Sterile Products, endorsed the document on behalf of his company.
Speaking at the ceremony, Bala said that the ministry’s initiative was in consonance with the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan, adding that the aim was to encourage local manufacturing of medical consumables.
He said that the MoU was a confirmation of the ministry’s conviction in the quality of the company’s products, saying “agencies and hospitals under the Ministry of Health will now be expected to patronize and encourage the company as much as possible”.
Nnadi expressed the company’s appreciation of the minister’s encouragement of local manufacturers in the health sector.
He recalled that the ministry had on Oct. 1, 2012 officially directed all federal tertiary health institutions to change over to the use of AD syringes.
In another development, First Medical & Sterile Products has announced its recent certification by the World Health Organization (WHO), a recognition that places the company among the best in the world in terms of best practice in syringe manufacturing.
Nnadi said that the certification “attests to the high quality of the company’s products’’, adding that company’s syringes are WHO/ISO certified in addition to NAFDAC and the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria Certification.
He told officials of the Federal Ministry of Health that the company would engage in a nationwide train-the-trainer programme for healthcare personnel in the use of AD syringes.
He stated that Niger State was the first state to partner with his company in a state-wide training programme covering all government medical units, adding that Edo State also benefited from the exercise.
According to Nandi, the University of Benin Teaching Hospital and Delta State Ministry of Health are “among the major health institutions already using the company’s AD syringes with very good report.”
