Poitier played a significant role in the film industry by exploring racial tensions through film. He won the Oscar in 1963 for his role in the film, “Lilies of the field”.
The actor’s role in movies such as, “In the heat of the light”, “Guess who’s coming to dinner,” helped the audience to see black people as a dignified part of society.
Former President of the United States of America, Barack Obama, has reacted to the news of the death.
In a post on Twitter, he shared a photo of the actor with the caption, “He opened doors for a generation of actors”.
Other celebrities have since shared kind words and tributes on social media.
He was aged 94.
