In a chat with Trustsports, the Director of Sports in the FCT, Mallam Alim Musa said this year’s championship has witnessed tremendous improvement with all the 62 council wards taking part in the competition which he said is aimed at discovering budding female football players and using them to form the nucleus of FCT female football club popularly called FCT Queens.
He explained that part of the reasons for floating the championship is to fortify the FCT Queens which used to be a force to reckon with in Nigerian female football competitions.
Alim said to make this year’s championship more attractive, the FCT sports council apart from the N50, 000 grant to each of the wards, one set of jersey, 2 set of goalkeeper jerseys, 20 pairs of football boots, 20 pairs of shin guards, and 20 stockings have been released to each of the 62 wards to motivate and facilitate their participation in the championship.
Furthermore, the Director of Sports said each of the six Area Councils have been given a trophy for the finals at the Area Councils level.
He said: “We observed that last year, only few wards participated in the championship. But this year, what we have done to empower and stimulate the wards towards effective participation, we have bought all the necessary football equipment for all the 62 wards in the FCT. Each of the 62 wards has been given branded jersey.
“ The winner of the championship for now goes home with N3000,000.00, the runners up will get N200,000.00 while the third place team will take home N100,000.00, bringing the total prize money to N600,000.00”, he said.
