First South Sudan UN camp closes

Four years after it opened its doors to people fleeing violence in South Sudan, the UN is closing its first protection site.

It was opened next to the UN base in Melrut, in the Upper Nile region, after civil war broke out in 2013.

But now the people who sought shelter there have said they feel safe enough to go home.

The UN has been working with humanitarian agencies to return families either to Melut town, their home villages, or another UN protection site.
