Ododa who spoke with our reporters in his farm at Jikoyi, new Karu argued that fish feed more in the middle of the night. He challenges fish farmers to go to their ponds that time and see how the fishes will be struggling, looking for what to eat
He stressed that most fishes don’t like coming out in the day time to eat, a situation which he said also applied to fishes in the rivers. They rest more in the day time and come out to feed in the night.
“When you feed them in the daytime only, they don’t eat as much as they should because fish naturally doesn’t like the sun. Farmers hardly take note of this and that is where they fail. A good farmer must get somebody to be around to give them food. I am telling you the truth try it. When you give your fish food in the middle of the night they eat more and grow more,” he said.
He pointed out that in most fishing communities, fishermen go to fish in the midnight because “that is when all the fishes big and small come out to feed.
He stressed that a fish farmer will also see if there are problems with his farm if he goes to check it in the night, adding, “most big fishes hardly come out in the day time. You might find only the small ones coming outside. But in the middle of the night, all of them come out. Check what I am telling you if you have a farm. But many farmers think this is impossible and that is why very few farms that inculcate this principle produce fish that weigh more than 2 kilogrammes.”
He advised fish farmers to also administer feed any time from 11pm and watch how the fish feed, saying the weather is calm and the fishes like it.
He encouraged fish farmers to also constantly change the water, which he said is very important; and also sort out the fishes according to their sizes in order to administer the right food and to avoid cannibalism.
