The fish popularly called “Giwar Ruwa,” Ishaku said, can lay more than 600, 000 eggs once in a year. “It is the most prolific fish in fresh water. The good thing about the fish is that it doesn’t stay in small water; it stays in dams, reservoirs, or bigger rivers like rivers Niger or Benue.”
On whether one can raise them in ponds, Ishaku said, “no because there will not be enough dissolved oxygen inside the pond, because of the fact that it is a fresh water fish.” He said the fish can also not grow in marine or lagoon environment because it is a fresh water fish.
Ishaku told our reporter that the fish feeds only on fish.
He revealed that one can culture the seed by stocking them, adding that with the availability of dams all over the country, farmers can pick the seeds and stock them.
He said a 90kg size of the fish goes for N150,000 and advised farmers with access to dams to come together through co-management system in fishery to raise them.
