Our women who were strong; Mrs Ransome Kuti, Emotan, Queen Amina of Zazzau, Gambo Sawaba .There are so many Nigerian heroes. Let us remember them for what they stood for, let’s read about them. Let’s teach our children.
2) The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran. A must read for everyone who wants to better themselves and be useful to mankind. Anyone who wants to be inspired and wise must read this book written in1923 by this Lebanese American poet.
3) Eyewitness to Power: The essence to Leadership, Nixon to Clinton by David Gergen. This is an incredible book written by a white house adviser who served four American presidents. It’s about the different approaches to leadership by his various principals and his contribution as a white house insider. There are interesting back stories about how decisions were taken and other little happenstances behind the scenes that we may not be privy to. A must read about how to speak truth to power and the role of professionals in a democratic government and how to deploy their knowledge for service.
4) Tenants of the House, Wale Okediran’s factional novel about legislators and legislating in Nigeria is an important book for all to engage with in order to see the different sides of the National Assembly and lend our voice to how we are governed.
5) Leading like Madiba by Martin Kalunga Banda.
BONUS BOOKS
Sefi Attah’s Everything Good Will Come is a heart-warming story about Nigeria and particularly Lagos of yore.
Out of Nigeria: Witness to a Giant’s Toll (Spectrum books Nigeria) by J.L Brandler tells the Nigerian story by a foreigner and the tales are as sweet as they are elevating. He says Nigerians are a resilient people who never give up and he particularly likes our famous comment “Tomorrow go better.”
The biography of Winnie Mandela, Winnie Mandela, a life written by Anne Marie du Perez Bezdrob is a must read by all those who think they are suffering. Winnie’s story will make them grateful for their freedom.
