On September 21, French channel TV5 Monde aired an interview with Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, spokesperson for the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA).

In the interview, Ramadane spoke about the group’s position on northern Mali and said the FLA maintains “good contacts” with Ukraine and France.

His comments drew attention as they come days after the justice ministers of the Sahel States Confederation (AES) announced they were considering legal action at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding allegations of foreign interference in the region.

Malian authorities have previously accused foreign states of backing armed groups in the north, while both France and Ukraine have denied such claims.

The interview has added to ongoing debate about external involvement in the conflict, with observers noting that statements from armed group leaders may influence regional diplomatic tensions.
