From next year, every fleet owner must provide insurance for passengers who board their fleet on a journey or face persecution, Chief Executive Officer, Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) Mr Babatunde Irukera has insisted.

Speaking yesterday in Abuja during the Ember months safety sensitisation forum organised by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in collaboration with the FCCPC, he said it was important for fleet owners to prioritise the lives of their passengers hence any passenger who experiences an injury or death, the fleet owner must provide compensation.

He said the commission will ensure that every vehicle owned by fleet owners must be in good conditions before it is used on the highways hence “we will develop a policy on aging fleet.”

Irukera noted that the fleet owners must ensure that their drivers drive with safety to protect the lives of the passengers no matter the condition of the roads.

On his part, Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi noted that part of the reasons why people do not get compensated during fatalities was because most fleet owners get fake third party insurance.

He lamented that most driving schools lacked integrity as they only collected monies from people and do not train them on how to drive, hence there were many bad drivers on the highways.
