The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in collaboration with Messrs Abjar Agricultural Processing Nigeria Limited has trained livestock farmers in 13 states affected by flood last year on biosecurity measures.

They are Bayelsa, Kogi, Delta, Rivers, Kebbi, Jigawa, Yobe, Taraba, Benue, Edo, Niger, Adamawa, Gombe and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Daily Trust reports that biosecurity is a set of practices to prevent disease or disease-causing agents from entering a farm or leaving a farm.

Experts say during floods, biosecurity measures in farms are compromised, because of the mass movement of water bodies, which carries disease pathogens and leads to an outbreak of diseases in livestock farms.

Declaring the training open, the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria (CVON) who also doubles as the Overseeing Director of the Department of Veterinary and Pest Control Services, Dr Musa Mohammed Inuwa, said the training was one of the strategies by the government to assist affected farmers and to also prevent future occurrence.

Daily Trust reports that the livestock farmers were trained by experts in cattle, small ruminants, pig and poultry health. They also interacted, shared challenges, and made recommendations to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture.
