Severe flooding and rainstorms have wreaked havoc across communities in Kogi and Kebbi states, leaving over 500 houses destroyed, displacing scores of families, and causing extensive damage to properties and livestock.

In Kogi State, over 500 houses were submerged following days of heavy rainfall in Kabba, the headquarters of Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area.

The disaster, which occurred after continuous rainfall lasting three days, caused streams and brooks to overflow their banks, flooding multiple communities with devastating consequences.

Among the worst-hit areas is the Idde-Iyah community within the Kabba metropolis. Residents reported that the rainfall began on Wednesday night and persisted until the weekend, leading to widespread destruction.

A former Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Mathew Kolawole, described the incident as a humanitarian crisis that threatens the dignity, safety and livelihoods of the affected residents.

An official at the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) acknowledged awareness of the incident but said a detailed report was still being awaited.

In a similar development, a rainstorm destroyed no fewer than 60 houses in Zogirma, Bunza Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The storm, which lasted for over three hours, also triggered flooding in four other villages in Arewa LGA – Tungar Chindo, Tungar Kure, Feske Malabawa and Feske Rafi.

Over 60 houses, livestock and properties worth hundreds of thousands of naira were lost in the disaster.

A resident of Zogirma, Abubakar Usman, said several people sustained injuries during the flooding and have been temporarily relocated to public facilities within the area.

The Secretary of Bunza Local Government Council, Malam Muhammed Umar Mawo, who visited the victims, assured them of support.

He said the council would compile a comprehensive report and submit it to the Kebbi State Government for prompt intervention.
