More states of the federation are experiencing flood which is killing, destroying homes, properties and farmlands, a Daily Trust check has revealed.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has alerted that following the release of water from both local and international dams and coupled with the increasing intensity of rainfall, a total of 27 states across the nation would experience flood this year. Mr. Moses Beckley, Director General NIHSA, said that already series of flood incidents had been reported at different levels of severity in many states.
“Some coastal areas including Ondo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta and Lagos are experiencing coastal flooding due to sea level rise and ocean surges while flash and urban floods were also experienced in some urban locations such as Lagos, Port Harcourt, Sokoto, Birnin-Kebbi and Ibadan,” he said.
He warned that the river levels across the country had increased and that people living around flood plains should relocate to safer areas.
“The rise in the water level at both River Benue and Niger is fairly attributed to the periodic release of water from Lagdo Dam, coupled with the intermittent rainfall,” he added.
According to him, at the confluence in Lokoja, the water level presently is 8.32m as against the 10.61m at this time in 2012 when the country witnessed the ravaging flood that destroyed farms, houses and killed over a hundred.
