Flood wreaks havoc in Kaduna community

Residents of Manchok community, Moro’a Chiefdom in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State, have appealed to both the federal and state governments for urgent assistance following severe flooding that submerged homes and farmlands.

The floods, which resulted from heavy rainfall over the past three days, destroyed properties, food crops, and plantations, leaving residents stranded and counting their losses.

One of the affected residents, Duniya Awuwu Sambo, told newsmen in front of his flooded house that the incident left him confused and helpless.

He lamented that electronics, furniture, and other household items were destroyed.

“The flood destroyed my property and kept my family awake all night draining water from the house,” he said.

Similarly, Luka Ishaya, a farmer, said his crops and plantations, which are his only source of livelihood, were completely washed away.

“The incessant rains, instead of benefiting us, have brought devastation. It is really sad,” he said.

Another resident, Thomas Yatai, attributed the flooding to blocked waterways and the absence of proper drainage in the community.

He also faulted poor waste management, noting that many residents dump refuse on roadsides and into drains.

A youth leader in the community, Moses Mathew, regretted that the disaster could have been contained if the drains were functional.

He said youths had resolved to embark on self-help measures by creating makeshift water channels and clearing blocked drains while awaiting government support.

Daily Trust reports that though no lives were lost, residents of Manchok are struggling to recover from the impact of the flood.
