Flooding: Isheri, Agbado, Akute residents beg govt

Residents of Isheri, Akute, Ajuwon and Agbado communities in Ogun State yesterday appealed to the Ogun State government to tackle perennial flooding, repair deplorable roads and and boundary dispute in their areas.

The residents made the appeal when an aspirant for the Ifo/Ewekoro federal constituency seat, Adeleke Adewolu, toured Isheri-Akute-Ajuwon and Agbado-Oke-Aro Local Council Development Areas of Ogun State.

Communities in the two LCDAs, which share borders with Lagos State, have been exposed to dilapidated roads and consequent severe flooding since the Ogun State government embarked on the dualisation of the Sango-Ojodu Berger road. The project has, however, suffered from fits of epileptic construction and neglect.

Adewolu, who is the Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs, had been picked as the All Progressives Congress consensus candidate for Ifo/Ewekoro federal constituency.

Some of the residents told Daily Trust that floods had claimed some lives in the areas, while hundreds of people had been displaced.

A resident of Akute, Chief Otubu Muyiwa, told our correspondent, “Flood is one of our major problems here. We panic whenever it rains. Many people have died with hundreds displaced. As I am talking to you, I have been displaced for more than a month.”

Also, a trader in baby needs at Akute, Mrs Dupe Bello, lamented that the deplorable roads in the area had affected socio-economic activities in the area, and had particularly ruined her business.

Adewolu promised the residents he would facilitate legal frameworks and resolutions to address their challenges.

“I promised effective representation if elected as the lawmaker. The boundary issue is something I would like to refer to the Boundary Commission. In most states, boundary issues are handled by Deputy Governors.

“But on this particular one, I will visit the disputed boundary, talk to the constituents and raise necessary correspondence and put pressure on agencies that can assist in putting an end to the dispute,” he said.
