Residents of Agwatashi in Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State have cried to government and good spirited individuals for help following a heavy rainfall that destroyed a bridge connecting the village with other communities in the area.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday.

Speaking to Aso Chronicle, Mr Ibrahim Adamu, a peasant farmer in the area, said the recent rain which fell for many hours, damaged a bridge and brought commercial activities to a standstill in the area.

According to him, civil servants and traders were compelled to stay at home.

Farmers in the community called on the state government to come to their aid by reconstructing the bridge to enable them to move their farm produce.

Adamu said: “The effect of the recent rain in the community has caused a major setback, particularly to farmers, who pass over that bridge on a daily basis to their farms.

“The bridge, which we have been managing, connects us with other communities in the local government so we have now been cut off,” he said urging government and public-spirited people to assist them.

A civil servant, who did want his name in print, said it has become difficult to go to the office since the bridge was washed away by rain.

When contacted on phone for comment, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Mr Aliyu Abdullahi Agwai, said the ministry had not received an official complaint from the affected community, adding that the government could only respond to official issues.
