The Senate on Wednesday urged the federal government to allocate N500bn from the Service Wide Vote to the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency for urgent rehabilitation of roads damaged by floods in several states.

The resolution followed a motion by Senator Gershom Bassey (PDP, Cross River). 

Over 30 states had, this year, experienced devastating floods that killed hundreds of people and displaced millions of others.

Bassey said the 2022 floods had worsened the deplorable state of federal roads across the country. 

He said some major interstate roads were impassable as water had washed off most parts of the roads and bridges, creating economic and human security crises. The Senate urged the government to declare a state of emergency on federal roads to improve their funding. 

It also asked the government to direct NNPC Limited to extend its Road Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme to the maintenance of failed sections of federal roads.
