Flying Eagles recall Haruna Aliyu for U-20 World Cup in Chile

Former Doma United defender, Haruna Aliyu, has rejoined Nigeria’s U-20 national team, the Flying Eagles, ahead of the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.

Aliyu, popularly known as LBC, was drafted back into the squad to replace Ikorodu City’s Marvelous Freedom, who was ruled out after sustaining an injury.

The Gombe-based defender is widely admired for his game-reading ability, solid tackles, and accurate passes from the back.

He was part of the squad during the WAFU competition and now returns to bolster Nigeria’s defence.

Speaking in a phone interview, Aliyu expressed delight at his recall, though he sympathised with his injured teammate.

“I am happy to rejoin the team, and at the same time, I feel for our defender who got injured. I promise to give my best and represent my country well. I thank everyone who made this possible, and above all, I thank God,” he said.

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will begin their U-20 World Cup campaign against Norway on Monday. They are drawn in the same group with Colombia and Saudi Arabia.

The team is expected to build on its continental outing and make a strong impression at the global stage.
