The Head of Clinical Services (HCS) of Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Lokoja, has said that the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) in the hospital are on strike as directed by their national body.

Taiwo in an interview on Friday in Lokoja said the strike was having minimal effects on patients due to the extra services rendered by other three categories of doctors.

"We have four categories of doctors which resident doctors are just one of them; all other three categories are fully on ground to render their services to patients," he said.

He said that apart from the resident doctors that are not working, other categories of doctors namely, Consultants, House Officers and Corps doctors were all on ground to attend to patients.

"This has really helped us a lot in keeping the services going on smoothly with minimal strike effects".

"There is a directive from Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria that one year of the interns should not be interrupted, and this has been strictly obeyed which has helped us in effective service delivery at the hospital.

"Where we used to have challenges before whenever resident doctors are on strike was in Labour ward, but the service has been made available by the commitment of the consultants.

"NARD FMC Lokoja chapter are on strike as they oblige to the directive of their national body," Taiwo said.

Meanwhile, efforts to contact the Chairman of NARD, FMC Lokoja chapter, Dr Shola Baoku, on the strike action was unsuccessful as he was not answering his calls.
