Chicken and ice products sellers in Kano said patronage is impressive as people make last-minute shopping for this year’s Christmas and festive period celebration in Kano with prices of essential items remaining largely low compared to last year.
Ali Musa, owner of Mumtaz ice products at Tarauni Market, said a kilogram of chicken hovers between N4500 and N4800 in the market.
In August a kilo of chicken was selling at N4700 according to Musa who said traders are recording impressive patronage this time.
Jamilu Lawan Yakubu who sells live birds said a medium size turkey costs N25000 and a bigger one goes for between N35000 and N40,000.
He said the price of broiler live chicken starts from N5,500 up to N10,000 or N20,000 depending on the size.
Guineafowl is sold at between N7000 and N10,000 just as the local breed of chicken is sold at between N4000 and N8000.
A shop owner Malam Musa Auwalu said 50kg of Gerewa and BUA rice are selling at N52000 while foreign one is sold at N66,000.
The price of 5 litres of cooking oil is N17000 while the price of local and foreign noodles is N13000 and N14000 respectively.
Perishable items sellers said a bowl of tomato is at N2000, Tatashe N2500 while that of onion is also N2000.
These prices show a significant drop compared to last year when a 50kg of rice was sold at around N110,000 with foreign rice reaching the threshold of N130,000.
Whole bird (chicken) last year were sold at N17000 and N25000.Cooking oil was at N18000 while a bowl of tomato and pepper was N3500.
Though prices differ between major markets like Sabon gari and other local markets, many families continue to visit markets to buy food items to feast for the festive period.
