Obama is partially accurate.  Post-Cold War relations between the West and former colonial Muslim countries have been marked by secular conflicts. Indonesia and India as the largest concentration of Islam’s geographical footprints have avoided the conflict. The ‘Bush Wars’ of January 15, 1991 and March 20, 2003 in Iraq were in protection of oil and Israel. In 1991 Sadam Hussein was hit for grabbing Kuwait’s vast oil deposits. Sadam himself believed he deserved reward by America for pouring blood into the glow of Ayatollah Khomeini’s Shia revolution.  President George Bush 1 protected interests of powerful American oil companies, including Bechtel.
 George Bush 2 bombed Baghdad in 2003 under lies of protecting humanity against ‘’weapons of mass destruction’’ which were chemical and not combustible Islamic doctrines. His ally Tony Blair would suffer because he had lied to British people about weapons which did not exist.  American dentists who looked for weapons in Sadam Hussein’s dental endowments also found none. Bush and Blair had given owners of shares in military industries a frontier for use and manufacture of weapons; and terminated resources of a man who was killing sleep in Israel with his experience of a long war against Iran.
A subsequent economic war, code named ‘’UN Economic sanctions’’, sought to starve Iraqis into popular rebellion against Sadam; as well as wreck Iraq’s modern state with highly developed educational, health, transport and scientific research sectors of governance.  Sadam’s bellicose posturing was openly secular.
President Obama was right in saying that in the Bush years America was ‘’not at war with Islam’’. The horrendous bombardments and looting of Iraq’s historical endowments was not blamed on Christianity, but, as he says, American ‘people’’ waging violence and theft.
President Bill Clinton probably fermented the ‘’Arab Spring’’ which swept Gaddafi unto death and Hosni Mubarak into prison. He reports working to build a critical mass of ‘’civil society’’ in Egypt of young entrepreneurs whose independent sources of wealth could incite aspirations for freedom from control by Egypt’s deeply entrenched police state and an economy dominated by the military under the cover of ‘’state capitalism’’. The youth who used ‘’social media’’ to mobilise youth protests in Tarhir Square were probably the ‘Clinton Crew’.
 In 2008 Gaddafi and Mubarak drew Russian and Italian gas giants – into joint large-scale investments in oil and gas in Egypt and Libya. Libya committed 10 billion dollars to build an oil refinery near Alexandria in Egypt to refine 740,000 barrels of oil daily. For NATO countries already dependent on Russian gas piped through Eastern Europe, it was a matter for grave panic that Russia would also control oil and gas from North Africa.  Gadaffi with his wild dreams of imperial domination was the Terrible Desert Lion behind looming energy vulnerability by NATO countries. The frenzy with which Euro-America bombarded Libya was due to Gaddafi being seen as a ‘’weapon of energy strangulation’’ of NATO.
The Americans disbanded Sadam Hussein’s military, intelligence and administrative apparatus to prevent the minority Sunni Muslims carrying out a military coup against a majority Shia political government.  The Americans did not expect ex-military generals and intelligence operatives to start selling vegetables and shining shoes to feed their families; meekly weeping over loss of power. They probably expected a bitter urban guerrilla warfare that would keep Arabs killing each other and away from the American homeland.
The same policy was adopted in Libya. Gaddafi’s war against Al-Qaeda made them useful fighters for NATO. Libyans killing Libyans is more tolerable than ‘’Muslim radicals’’ killing people on the streets of Chicago or Miami. Having lost power, there is a tendency to fight to the end to regain it.
The imperial aspiration of ISIL imitates the global reach of America and her allies. Their roots in Sadam Hussein’s disbanded security apparatus anchors its brilliance in operations. If Euro-America waved banners of promoting ‘’democracy, human rights and the rule of law’’, to justify uprooting Sunni power in Iraq, opposition to it must preach their total negation by pragmatic military non-religious grounds.
That leaves Obama with the challenge of ending Euro-American diplomacy as primarily economic. He must enter eyes of Congolese youths who see parents blown to pieces of flesh because M23 mercenaries are serving profits by American ‘real economicus’. He must invent diplomacy which joys in joys of others; not fuelled with human blood.
