The European Union-ACP Instructor Deve-lopment Infrastructure Professor, EU Univer-sity, Belgium, Dr. Shima Adum, disclosed this recently when the Wright Brothers Farm Global called on Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, at the government house in Makurdi.
“Nigeria is now five million tonnes shortfall of rice after the devastating flood it experienced last year,” he said.
Adum who is also the coordinator, Benue Food Basket Fund, said that the rice scarcity development requires the attention of governments at all levels to bridge the gap because the country has resorted to huge importation of rice to meet its food needs.
He told the governor that the United States’ agricultural experts were in the state to seek his support to help develop and produce global quality rice as well as other kinds of grains to further boost the non-oil sector of the economy.
Responding, Suswam assured of his administration’s willingness to partner with the experts, saying that the state is blessed with fertile soil and expanse land to produce food enough to feed the nation.
The governor stressed the need for them to inspect the state owned moribund rice mill with a view for any interested investor to take over the property.
“We are available to partner with willing farmers. We have no security challenges in any part of the state and we have a moribund rice mill for willing investors to take over,” Suswam said.
