The Chartered Institute of Forensics and Certified Fraud Investigators of Nigeria (CIFCFIN) is urging the creation of a National Tax Fraud Investigation and Forensic Oversight Framework. The institute believes this new framework is essential to improving Nigeria’s tax system.

Dr. Iliyasu Gashinbaki, the founder and chairman of CIFCFIN’s governing council, made the announcement during the institute’s 13th Direct Membership Training, Licensed Practitioners Training, and Fellowship Awards in Abuja. While praising President Bola Tinubu for signing the Tax Reform Bill into law, Dr. Gashinbaki emphasized that no law can enforce itself. He called for a framework to deepen forensic investigations, which would improve tax compliance and enforcement. The framework would target high-risk sectors such as telecommunications, oil and gas, banking, construction, maritime, and import trade.

According to Gashinbaki, tax fraud, like other economic crimes, thrives on complexity, collusion, and complacency. To combat this, he advocated for a forensic counterattack.

Also at the event, the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB), Dr. Abdullahi U. Bello, was inducted as an honorary fellow of the institute. He stated that this recognition serves as a reminder of the CCB’s crucial role in promoting transparency, accountability, and ethical governance in Nigeria. He assured the audience that the honor inspires him to intensify his efforts in ensuring that things are done correctly.
