Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mukthari Ibrahim, who briefed newsmen on the development, said investigations conducted by his men showed that the deceased had been unhappy with his son over the son’s alleged squandering of his wealth. “When the son persisted in the act, the father took him up and told him that he could no longer fold his arms and watch him squander his wealth because he is not the only child he has.”

Ibrahim continued: “The suspect got annoyed over this warning and resorted to attacking his father with a cutlass, killing him. He then buried his remains in a bush near the village.”

The suspect, when paraded at the police headquarters in Ilorin before newsmen, confirmed that he killed his father, saying the incident which shot him to into notoriety, resulted from the fight he had with his father over an issue to do with his sister. Deno said the fracas ensued when he pleaded with his father to allow the family unite and raise funds to enable his sister relocate to her husband’s house. Allegedly irritated over Deno’s confrontational stance, the senior Deno took a stick and hit his son.

“I asked my father to allow them sell some bags of corn in stock to raise N3, 000 for my younger sister who had come from her matrimonial home to pay us a visit. But my father angrily disagreed with me and resorted to beating me with a stick while I retaliated by attacking him with a cutlass.”

“When I discovered that he was dead, I ran away and returned later in the day to discover that the corpse was still lying on the floor unburied.”

This situation prompted Deno to reach for a hoe and dig a grave to bury his father before he went to inform people about it. Describing the incident as the handiwork of the devil, Deno pleaded for mercy from the authorities.

He added that he decided to run away to avoid confrontation with his relatives.

Meanwhile, the police commissioner said that his command exhumed the remains of the deceased for medical examination, adding that the corpse has been photographed. He said that the cutlass the suspect used to commit the murder has also been recovered disclosing that the man will be charged to court as soon as the police complete investigations.
