Former Governor of Bayelsa State,Chief Diepreye  Solomon Peter Alamieyeseigha is dead.

Daily Trust gathered that Alamieyeseigha died after a brief illness at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital  (UPTH) in Rivers State on Saturday.

A family source said the former Governor developed  an “inexplicable” ailment in his hometown in Amassoma community of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa and was rushed to Port Harcourt.

The deceased, popularly addressed as Chief D.S.P  Alamieyeseigha,  was also popularly known as The  Governor-General of Ijaw Nation.  He was aged 62.

Alamieyeseigha  who was elected governor of Bayelsa state in 1999 was impeached early in his second term in 2005 following allegations of corruption.

He was earlier arrested in the United Kingdom, but jumped bail and returned to Nigeria. On arrival, he was impeached by the Bayelsa state House of Assembly and was thereafter arrested, convicted and jailed during the Obasanjo administration.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, a fellow Ijaw man, granted him presidential pardon in 2013 which drew public criticism.

British authorities are said to being reviewing his case  and had filed an extradition case against him; a development which allegedly  threw the former governor into deep emotional stress.
