In a press statement yesterday, Mohammed said “It is worrisome that today, despite the fact that our Constitution recognizes three tiers of government, only two out of the  three tiers of government enjoy autonomy.
“The current imbalance that we have today has also given the state governments the undue advantage of meddling into the administration of the local governments without any meaningful development in the rural areas.
“This has therefore incapacitated the local government from performing its constitutional duty to the people. We, hereby, call on every meaningful Nigerian to step up advocacy on  local government autonomy in the collective interest of our dear country.”
Mohammed, who is the National Coordinator of Project Nigeria, a Non-Governmental organisation called on well-meaning Nigerians to prevail on the houses of assembly to approve autonomy for the local governments.
