The former Executive Vice Chairman/Chief Executive of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Prof. Mohammad Haruna, has been lauded over his lifetime achievements.
In a statement, Mukhtar Saeed Ciroma, a public affairs analyst, said Haruna’s career exemplifies a relentless pursuit of knowledge, innovation and public service.
The statement reads in part: “Haruna’s professional journey is as diverse as it is impressive, spanning academia, industry, and government.His early career involved hands-on roles as a technician, engineer, and manager in various industries. He honed his practical skills in companies such as NASCO Group of Companies and New Nigerian Printing and Packaging PLC. He further advanced his expertise through specialist training in heavy-duty engines at MASONS Power Generator in the United Kingdom.
“Not one to be confined to a single sector, Haruna transitioned into academia, serving as lecturer at Bayero University, Kano and later as Head of the department of Electronic and Engineering at Kaduna Polytechnic. He also led the Power Equipment and Electrical Machinery Development Institute (PEEMADI) in Okene, playing a crucial role in advancing Nigeria’s engineering capabilities. Today he serves as a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Abuja.”
The statement continued: “The pinnacle of Prof. Haruna’s public service was his tenure as Executive vice chairman and Chief Executive of NASENI, where he elevated the agency to a powerhouse of technological innovation and infrastructure development in Nigeria. Prior to this role, he served as Acting Director General, steering the organization toward achieving national development goals. His efforts were instrumental in driving key engineering projects and fostering collaborations that benefited both local industries and international partners.
“In recognition of his exceptional leadership and service, Haruna was awarded the National Honor of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022. He also received the Nigerian Excellence Award in Public Service that same year, further solidifying his reputation as a transformative leader. During a groundbreaking event, President Muhammadu Buhari, while inspecting innovations and commissioning projects, commended the optimal utilization of resources. Departing from his prepared speech as the board chairman of NASENI, he announced the conferment of two national honors on Prof. Haruna, recognizing his exceptional contributions.”
Haruna’s career has been celebrated through numerous awards and honors, including the Institution of Engineering and Technology(IET) Creativity and innovation Award in 2010 and multiple merit awards from the Nigerian Society of Engineers.
He has also received international recognition.
