A former middle-distance runner, Dr. Samuel Kolawole Oredipe, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Bayelsa State Athletics Association.

He takes over from Mr. Godwin Oghogho, whose tenure has elapsed.

Dr. Oredipe, who is the immediate past Vice-Chairman of the association, is also a current board member of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), where he serves as Auditor.

According to a letter of appointment endorsed by the Director of Sports, Bayelsa State Sports Council, Mr. Andrew Aye, Dr. Oredipe’s elevation to the position followed his contributions to the development of athletics in the state over the past five years.

Mr. Aye urged the new chairman to continue working with key stakeholders in the sport to achieve greater progress in the state.

Dr. Oredipe, a seasoned broadcaster and the current Director-General of Bayelsa State Government New Media, is also the founder of SamKay Athletics Club, Yenagoa.

Over the years, the club has discovered and nurtured young Bayelsa track and field athletes who have gone on to represent the state at both national and international levels.
