He stated this at a National Agricultural Seminar organised by the Agricultural-Veterinary Complex, ABU in collaboration with the All Famers’ Association of Nigeria (AFAN), which took place at the National Agricultural Extension Research Liaison Services (NAERLS), Zaria.
Professor Abdullahi said agriculture has the potentials of reducing the country’s dependence on oil, hence the need for serious attention on the sector.
Commenting on the theme of the seminar, ‘Agricultural Development Strategy in the New Political Dispensation’, Abdullahi said in view of the current uncertainty that oil faces in the global market, Nigeria has no other alternative than to embrace agriculture.
“If agriculture is given the desired attention, it will certainly aid the diversification drive of the nation’s economy apart from creating job opportunities for the teaming unemployed youth,” Abdullahi said.
The Vice Chancellor of ABU, Professor Ibrahim Garba, said collaboration among stakeholders is what is needed in revolutionising agriculture.
Professor Garba has described seminars that dwell on the way forward for agriculture as the path that would restore the honour and glory of the sector in Nigeria.
AFAN National President, Alhaji Kabir Ibrahim, said more than any other time, Nigerian farmers need unity now in order to facilitate the country’s economic drive.
Alhaji Ibrahim appealed to those in the corridors of power to involve farmers in decision making with a view to assisting grassroots farmers and giving them a sense of belonging.
