Participants at a one-day colloquium on “Inequality in Nigeria: Flagging up Women and Agriculture in a Changing Climate” have urged the Federal Government to evolve a practical and radicalized approach to tackle rising poverty and inequality in the country.

They made the call yesterday in Abuja at the event organised by the Human Environmental Development Agenda (HEDA), Voices for Food Security (VFFS) and Oxfam in Nigeria, stressing that poverty is worsening.

The Oxfam Country Director in Nigeria, Mr Iftikhar Nizami, represented by Oxfam’s Head of Influencing in Nigeria, Mr Abdulazeez Musa, said the recent views of Bill Gates on the need to focus on meeting the needs of people for economic development should be taken seriously.

The Executive-Director, HEDA Resource Centre, Mr Sulaiman Arigbabu said that inequality has permeated every facets of the country, especially in the private sector, politics, access to essential services and inequality in terms of access to opportunities.
