A social media forum, Dandalin Siyasa has expressed concern on the state of education in the northeast, just as it attributed the backwardness of the region to social decadence.
This was contained in a communiqué jointly signed by Alhaji Hashim Ubale Yusufu and Dr. Mainasara Yakubu Kurfi, chairman and chairman of the central working committee of the forum. The communiqué was  issued at the end of the forum’s Annual General Meeting held in Yola, Adamawa state.
“The forum observed that the social decadence in northeast was caused by corruption, poverty, unemployment, low access to social services and gender inequality. These are the fall out of insurgency and insecurity in the northern region.
“Today the insurgency had made northern Nigeria a gold medalist in terms of civil strife, death and ethno-religious crisis,” the communiqué stated.
The forum added that the insurgency had impacted negatively on region’s educational system, thereby widening the educational gap between northern and southern regions.
“Many schools especially in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states are still under lock and keys as a result of insurgency in the three affected states. Parents in the areas can no longer send their wards to schools,” the communiqué noted.
The forum therefore urged federal and state governments to map out modalities that would address the challenges of poverty and unemployment among youths in the country.
Professor Umar A. Pate of Bayero University Kano also said activities of Boko Haram in the northeastern region of the country turned the entire north into one of the largest violent areas in Africa.
Professor Pate stated this while presenting a paper titled
“Insecurity, Educational Development and the Fate of North East Region in Nigeria”.
He delivered the paper at a one day conference tagged “Democracy and Security in Northern Nigeria” organized to mark the forum’s seventh (7th) anniversary.
Pate who is also the Dean, Faculty of Communication, Theater Arts and Film studies in the University, said from 2009 to 2014 insurgency had converted the peaceful northern region into a major conflict area, as a result of which many people lost their lives and properties.
