The Medicaid Cancer Foundation (MCF) has donated N2.6 million to 13 cancer patients at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja.
Speaking while making the donation yesterday, the founder of MCF and First Lady of Kebbi State, Dr Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu, said the gesture was aimed at supporting the treatment of the patients.
She said incidences of cancer in the country kept rising but that cancer patients could survive with the right treatment and when given all the support they needed.
Dr Zainab further said that the foundation was working with government at all levels to ensure hospitals got the requisite equipment, drugs at cheap rates, ensured that everyone had easy access to cancer care and also supported experts to conduct research on cancer.
The Senior Consultant Radiation and Clinical Oncologist at the FMC, Jabi, Dr Tessy O. Ahmadu, said that the cancer unit of the hospital started in 2020 and had recorded some achievements.
She said radiotherapy was the only form of cancer treatment that was not currently offered at the hospital, but that they partnered with the National Hospital, Abuja, when patients needed it.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the FMC, Prof Ahmed Sa’ad, while thanking Dr Zainab for the donation, said many cancer patients didn’t present themselves early for treatment thereby making their treatment difficult.
