In a powerful display of community impact and educational advocacy, Sage Impact Foundation, founded by Dr. Chiamaka Grace Ohanebo, awarded its first set of micro-scholarships to deserving students at Women Day College, Bida, Niger State, Nigeria.

This monumental step marks a crucial milestone in the foundation’s mission to support education and personal development for young students, particularly girls, in underserved regions in Northern Nigeria.

On October 24, 2023, the foundation held its first phase of the initiative, recognizing 10 outstanding students, ranging from JSS2 to SS2, who demonstrated academic excellence, active participation, and a commitment to personal growth.

These bright individuals became the first beneficiaries of the foundation’s 1-year micro-scholarship program, aimed at eliminating the financial barriers that often force students particularly girls out of school.

The event was filled with joy and gratitude, as photograph captured the radiant smiles and excitement of the awardees, who now have the opportunity to continue their education without the looming fear of financial set back.

The awardees were joined by the school’s principal, teachers, and the foundation’s founder. Dr. Ohanebo, in a powerful demonstration of community-centered leadership and service, reaffirmed her commitment to empowering young women through education.

This initiative is particularly significant as it underscores the urgent need for gender equity in education in Northern Nigeria, where many girls continue to face systemic barriers limiting their access to quality learning opportunities.

Building on this momentum, the second phase of the micro-scholarship program took place on July 24, 2024, where an additional 20 students from JSS1 to SS2 were awarded scholarships.

This event was graced by community stakeholders, local dignitaries, educators, and parents, all united in their shared goal of nurturing the next generation of resilient, educated young women. This expansion of the initiative illustrates the growing need for targeted support to bridge the educational gap in the region.

The Need for Gender Equity in Education in Northern Nigeria

Despite global progress towards gender equity in education, Northern Nigeria continues to face significant challenges, particularly for girls.

According to UNESCO, more than 10 million children are out of school in Nigeria, with a disproportionate number of them being girls from the northern part of the country. Factors such as early marriage, cultural expectations, and inadequate infrastructure contribute to the systemic barriers girls face in accessing education.

In many parts of Northern Nigeria, entrenched social norms continue to favor the education of boys over girls, contributing to pronounced gender disparities in literacy and educational attainment.

Girls are often expected to assume domestic responsibilities at an early age, and in some cases are married before completing basic education. These realities significantly disrupt their learning journeys and have far-reaching consequences, including persistent educational inequality, limited economic and career opportunities, heightened vulnerability to gender-based violence, and prolonged cycles of poverty and dependence.

In light of these challenges, the gesture by Sage Impact Foundation is not just an educational initiative; it is a critical intervention that seeks to break these barriers and provide girls with the opportunity to dream, learn, and grow.
