The Wellbeing Foundation Africa has launched two more hashtags to rally information and support to promote the welfare of midwives, seen as crucial to the survival of newborns and mothers.

#MamaCare and #MamaKind, both launched on Abuja to mark the International Day of the Midwife, will join #MaternalMonday to complement long-standing work meant to raise awareness on maternal, newborn and child health, especially including the important role midwives play in the continuum of care, Wellbeing said.

Wellbeing chief executive officer Stephen Sobhani said, "We all know the cry of a baby, but sometimes tragically, we don’t hear it."

"Midwives are the first eyes to see and the first hands to hold our future. If we improve lives, we save the world, and Nigerians can change the world. WBFA has always put midwives at the centre of its interventions, as it understands the important position they hold in achieving sustainable change in healthcare, as well as reaching the SDG [Sustainable Development Goals] targets for Nigeria and the rest of sub-Saharan Africa," he noted.

Wellbeing founder and president and a global goodwill ambassador for the International Confederation of Midwives, Toyin Saraki, said, “I will like to personally commend the dedication of Nigerian midwives, as well as midwives from all around the world. I have seen with my own eyes the value that having a midwife can make to a mother."
