The Path to Peace Foundation has launched a new initiative to strengthen grassroots governance and accountability across the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The project, themed “The Abuja Project: Empowering Communities for Grassroots Impact,”aims to foster sustainable development through participatory decision-making and improved transparency at the local government level.
A statement by Fareedah Omiyale, the Foundation’sCommunications Officer noted that rural development is the primary responsibility of local governments, yet many communities, especially in remote parts of Abuja, remain excluded from decision-making processes.
This exclusion, it said, often results in ineffective governance and unmet community needs.

The launch comes in the wake of the Supreme Court’s judgment of July 11, 2024, which reinforced the financial and administrative autonomy of local governments. With greater autonomy now granted, the Foundation stressed that accountability of the Area Councils has become critical for quality governance and rural development.
Supported by the Nigeria Youth Futures Fund, the Abuja Project seeks to bridge the gap between citizens and their local governments. It will provide platforms for engagement through fellowships, town hall meetings, research, and advocacy campaigns.
